the n-word

i read the adventures of huckleberry finn in 8th grade, when we lived in ethiopia. i hated it. it was a month out of my life that i’ll never get back. and i recall my english teacher taking a poll in class as to whether the n-word should be read out loud when we read passages during class or if we should substitue the word to “negro”. i remember distinctly voting to keep the original word. the word made me uncomfortable, but it did not offend me and quite frankly, it’s how they spoke back then.

the class voted for the word to be substituted.

yesterday it came out that new additions of this book will now have the word changed to “slave”.

this offends me. and i cannot explain why. i hate that word. i hate the book. but the whole having that one word changed irks me something fierce.
